Evaluators Portal

Welcome, Evaluators!

Thank you for volunteering to judge Avante Science fairs. Your expertise and encouragement make a huge difference for our students.

How Evaluations Work

On fair day, student projects are displayed throughout the room — each student stands beside their display board ready to present. As an evaluator, you'll be assigned a group of projects to review. Here's what to expect:

  • You'll visit each student at their station — typically 4 to 8 projects per evaluator
  • The student gives a short presentation of their project (about 2–3 minutes)
  • You ask a few follow-up questions to learn more about their process and findings
  • You score the project privately using the rubric below, then move to the next student
  • At the end, score sheets are collected and results are tallied

Plan for about 2–3 hours total. The goal isn't to find perfection — it's to engage each student and celebrate their effort and curiosity.

Judging Rubric

Each project is scored across five categories for a total of 100 points.

Category What to Look For Points
Scientific Question & Hypothesis Is the question clear and testable? Does the student make a prediction? 20
Research & Background Did the student research the topic? Do they understand the science behind it? 20
Methodology Was the experiment well-designed? Could someone else repeat it the same way? 20
Results & Analysis Are data clearly presented? Does the student interpret the results correctly? 20
Presentation & Communication Can the student explain their work clearly and answer questions confidently? 20
Total 100

Tips for Evaluators

  • Be encouraging — many students are presenting for the first time
  • Ask open-ended questions: "What surprised you most?"
  • Focus on effort and understanding, not perfection
  • Score each category independently before looking at the total
